Heads up, everyone - February 14 is St Valentine's Day! Will you be planning something traditional, extraordinary, or a quiet night in? However you choose to celebrate, here are some green alternatives to show you love your planet as well...
1) Buy a (flowering) plant - believe it or not, but buying cut flowers isn't exactly the greenest thing you can do. Commercial cut flowers are often harvested using various chemicals and then shipped miles to reach their destination - the process creates tonnes of greenhouse gases. If you are unsure of whether or not your flowers are locally and ethically sourced, instead, opt for buying a plant. Flowering or non-flowering, you can tell your sweetie you'll watch your love grow all year long.
2) 'Green' Chocolate - who doesn't love a bit of chocolate for Valentine's Day, or any day of the year for that matter? Unfortunately, there are a number of chocolate providers that produce in un-ethical and unsustainable conditions. If you're picking up some of the sweet stuff, be sure to look for bars that clearly state they are members of associations like Fairtrade International or Rainforest Alliance and enjoy your chocolate munching guilt-free.
3) Let's Go Outside - you could go out for an amazing lunch or dinner, but if the weather is kind, why not pre-pack yourself some of your favourite things and head outside? Enjoy nature this Valentine's Day and head on a romantic hike or picnic - nothing says 'love' like creating fun and lasting memories with your partner. Just be sure to leave nature as you found it and take any rubbish with you when you head home.
