Koh Yao Yai - Hidden Gem in Thailand

Planning a trip to Thailand is not difficult, but to find an untouched island that's not overwhelmed with tourists and not westernized is rare. We were determined to find the perfect getaway island and in the end, our research led us to the mysterious Koh Yao Yai island.

Located in the Andaman Sea, in between the popular islands of Phuket and Krabi, sits one of Thailand's untouched islands - Koh Yao Yai. While Koh Yao Yai might not be postcard-worthy, it's peaceful, quiet and has lots of natural beauty to offer.

How to get there from Phuket:

Grab a taxi from anywhere in Phuket to Bangrong Pier that's situated north Phuket. And from there take a speedboat or longtail boat to Koh Yao Yai.

Unless you have booked transportation from your chosen accommodation beforehand, you have to take a taxi from the Koh Yao Yai pier to your hotel.

Where to stay in Koh Yao Yai:

If you are looking to spoil yourself, then high-end resorts like the Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort & Spa, Glow Elixir Koh Yao Yai and the Koh Yao Yai Village are all ready to pamper you. We chose to stay at the Koh Yao Yai Village because it claims to be an eco-friendly resort and it had the best review among the other resorts.

The Koh Yao Yai Village is a 4-star luxury resort nestled within a rainforest, with facilities like an infinity pool, a library, a gym, souvenir shop, spa and a pool bar and restaurant. The long stretch of beach at the Koh Yao Yai Village makes a good playground for beach volleyball, mini-soccer, jogging and fun games in the water (when it's low tide).

Each bungalow is decorated with local hand-crafted artworks and furnishings. We indulged ourselves with the spacious one-bedroom sea view villa, the living room was surrounded by ceiling-high windows, and features a private terrace with views of the sea. Did we mention the outdoor and indoor rainshower facilities?

We were very pleased with our stay at the Koh Yao Yai Village. We love being secluded and enjoyed being in touch with mother nature, it was even better being with the right company. Some nights, we would plug in our laptop, enjoy a bit of Netflix (it was impressive that they were able to lend us an HDMI cable!) and order room service. Can we just say the room service meals we had were absolutely fantastic?

Cost for 1 bedroom sea view villa: THB 9,505 for 2 people incl. room service

Things to do in Koh Yao Yai Island:

1. Rent a motorcycle and explore the island

Having a scooter is practically a must in Koh Yao Yao. Not only does it allow you to explore the island quite freely, but it's also much cheaper than hiring a car to drive you around.

2. Beach Hopping

Koh Yao Yai has many great beaches to offer. A lot of them are never crowded and quite secluded, which is perfect for us. Son Bay Beach, Ao Sai Beach and Ao Muong Beach are great but we would recommend watching the sunset at our favourite beach of the island - Lam Haad Beach.

3. Book a day tour out of the island

Take a day trip to Koh Yao Yai's neighbouring island, Koh Yao Noi or book a tour to see James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay. We booked a private tour to Phang Nga Bay since it was low season but we enjoyed having a wooden boat to ourselves and doing activities like kayaking, site seeing and shopping on our own time without being rushed.

4. Design your own souvenir at Batik De

Looking to buy souvenirs? Why not design your own authentic souvenir instead?
Visit Batik De on the island for beautiful genuine, hand-painted Batik art. Get your creative juices flowing and join their workshops, where they teach you the traditional technique of the art of Batik. This is a great way to support the locals on the island and learn more about their culture!

4. ATV & Scuba Diving Tours

Discover hidden treasures of the island with Koh Yao Yai ATV or scuba dive with Elixir, where they will provide you with all equipment, training, and excursions to spots all around Koh Yao Yai and further based on the Andaman sea.

5. Room Service, Massage and Spa

Take full advantage of your resort, enjoy the facilities and spa because you are on vacation and deserve to be pampered.

Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, Koh Yao Yai is a great choice. It is definitely worth a visit if you are looking for something slightly different from the other islands in the Andaman Sea.
