Chinese-Austrian born Jeanine Hsu graduated from Central Saint Martin’s (BA Honours in Fashion Design – Womenswear). A bright-eyed and eager graduate, Jeanine threw herself into the industry and gained experience working with the Vienna costume workshops for the Burgtheater and the Salzburg Festivals as well as with such brands as Vivienne Westwood, Diesel, and Temperley London alongside up and coming brands such as Bora Aksu and Warren Noronha.
After seeing the amount of waste the fashion industry created first hand, Jeanine decided it was time for change and started niin in 2009 to offer people more sustainable, environmentally-friendly fashion. Jeanine decided the key ethos behind the brand would be to ‘tread lightly on the earth’ and sought to create artisan jewellery that combines natural materials and a light environmental footprint.
niin’s unique and organic approach to design stems from Jeanine’s passion to preserve, share, and celebrate nature and all its beauty. Sourcing elements of her collections as waste materials from local restaurants and high-end furniture factories, Jeanine takes discarded shells and wooden off-cuts to give them new life in her designs.
niin works with small artisanal businesses across South East Asia, supporting their communities and hand-craftsmanship for the production of our designs. niin’s first producers were a husband and wife team whom Jeanine befriended at a Hong Kong market. They still produce for niin today, alongside other ethically run businesses in the Philippines and Thailand which Jeanine tries to visit regularly.

niin works with various charities to raise awareness and funds for environmental causes including WWF Hong Kong, The Nature Conservancy, Cuipo, Bloom, Plastic Oceans, and The Shark Foundation; as well as local Hong Kong charities including The Women’s Foundation and Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Foundation. Through her work Jeanine hopes to continue to spread a message of positivity and the importance of protecting and preserving the environment and our global community.
Jeanine was recently featured on the Tatler '”Generation T” list for 2018 and also recognised as the Winner of the HKAHF Women of Hope 2017 Eco Warrior Award. Her achievements have also earned her academic appointments with the Hong Kong School of Creativity, where she was Artist in Residence in 2009, and the Hong Kong Design Institute and SCAD, where she has been a lecturer and speaker in Jewellery Design.
This year, niin will co-open a Vocational Training school in the Philippines, collaborating with Don Bosco and The University of the Philippines to help to educate students in vital jewellery making skills to create more jobs with the intention to give back and help the Filipino industry to thrive.
